The 5 Best Hikes in Switzerland

On

Switzerland’s hiking scene is a treasure trove of experiences, offering everything from rugged peaks to tranquil lakes, all within easy reach. When I made the move from the States to Switzerland over three years ago, it wasn’t just for the famed cheese and chocolate – it was the mountains that truly captured my heart. Here, they’re not just a backdrop; they’re an integral part of everyday life, beckoning with their ever-changing vistas and endless trails.

With so many wonderful options, you can’t really go wrong with any hike that you pick. However, based on my own personal favourites, I’ve to put together a list of “the 5 best hikes in Switzerland” to help you plan your next hiking adventure. I’ve made sure to include hiking gems from all corners of Switzerland, spanning from the northern reaches to the southern valleys, and from the western landscapes to the untamed eastern horizons. So, lets explore some of the most breath-taking scenery this country has to offer!

What to Know Before Hiking in Switzerland?

Before setting off on a hiking adventure in Switzerland, there are a few key things to keep in mind. Firstly, be aware that hiking in mountainous terrain can be unpredictable, with weather conditions changing rapidly. It’s possible for sunny skies turn into snowstorms in the blink of an eye! Therefore, it’s crucial to always be prepared. Make sure to pack extra layers of warm clothing and carry additional supplies, especially if you plan on being out on the trails for an extended period.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

As for the best time to visit Switzerland for hiking, I’d recommend aiming for the hiking season, which typically kicks off in June after the snow has melted sufficiently and lasts until late September or even October, depending on weather conditions. However, do bear in mind that this period coincides with peak tourism season, particularly in popular destinations like Lucerne, Interlaken, or Zermatt. It’s wise to plan your accommodations in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles. Alternatively, the fall season presents a charming option for hiking, with fewer crowds and the added bonus of colorful autumn foliage. Just be prepared for variable weather conditions, including the possibility of snow and colder temperatures.

What to Wear Hiking?

When it comes to hiking attire, my top tip is to layer up! I’ve learned first-hand that temperatures can fluctuate drastically throughout the day. Therefore, it’s essential to dress in clothing that offers protection from the elements while allowing you to regulate your body temperature effectively. Opt for moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer shell to keep you comfortable and dry. Don’t forget sturdy hiking boots, a sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to complete your hiking ensemble.

1. OESCHINENSEE

Tucked away in the Bernese Alps, overlooking the picturesque town of Kandersteg, lies the pristine Oeschenin Lake. Surrounding the lake are extensive trails, offering opportunities for leisurely walks or adventurous hikes into the mountains. You can also unwind at the lakeside restaurant or rent a boat for a leisurely paddle.

One of the most enjoyable loops begins at Oeschinensee and leads to Oberbärgli and Heuberg, totaling about 3.5 hours of hiking time. This route provides diverse perspectives of the lake amidst breathtaking alpine scenery. Keep in mind, though, some sections are steep and narrow, so it’s best suited for those comfortable with heights.

To reach the lake, you can either brave a steep hike from Kandersteg or opt for the cable car ride to the mountaintop, followed by a scenic 30-minute walk to the lakeshore.

Hike Time: Around 3.5 Hours (depending on the chosen route)

Distance: Approximately 8km

Elevation Gain: 480m

Starting Point: Kandersteg Cable Car

2. SEEALPSEE (ALPSTEIN)

Seealpsee stands out as one of Switzerland’s beloved lakes, offering an easy day trip from Zurich. Nestled in the scenic Alpstein region, it boasts a plethora of hiking trails, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. For those less experienced in hiking, the journey to Seealpsee is accessible via a straightforward walk along a service road. Alternatively, you can opt for a cable car ride to Ebenalp, with the opportunity to visit the iconic Äscher Restaurant on your descent to the lake.

Perched dramatically on the cliffside, the Äscher Restaurant is a must-see attraction, renowned for its unique setting and picturesque views. It’s advisable to visit early to avoid the crowds and secure a table for a memorable dining experience.

To reach Seealpsee, you have two options: either trek up the service road from Wasserauen or take the Ebenalp cable car and hike down, stopping by the Ascher hut along the way.

Hike Time: Approximately 1 hour from Wasserauen or 1.5 hours from Ebenalp

Distance: Around 2.5km from Wasserauen or 2.6km from Ebenalp

Elevation Gain: 266m from Wasserauen

Starting Point: Wasserauen

3. PIZOL LAKE (5 LAKE HIKE)

Just over an hour from Zurich, the Pizol 5 Lake Hike is a rewarding day trip for hikers seeking stunning alpine scenery. Begin at the Pizol Gondola in Wangs, ascending to the Pizolhütte at the summit. From there, the trail unfolds, leading you through varied terrain and captivating landscapes. After about an hour of climbing, you’ll reach the first lake, Wildsee, its azure waters reflecting the surrounding peaks. As you continue your journey, you’ll encounter the other four unique lakes, before eventually descending back to Station Gaffia.

Hike Time: 4 Hours

4. BACHALPSEE

If you’re lodging around Interlaken, consider exploring Grindelwald nearby. This charming town serves as a gateway to numerous hikes offering breathtaking vistas of the towering Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau peaks, each soaring over 4000m. Among these trails, my top pick is the route from First Gondola to Bachalpsee, ideal for beginners seeking awe-inspiring scenery.

Accessible and requiring less than an hour’s stroll, the trail leads you to the tranquil Bachalpsee, where the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, and Finsteraarhorn peaks cast their reflections upon the shimmering blue waters. Ample benches invite you to pause for a picnic and soak in the views before considering an optional hour-long extension to Berghotel Faulhorn atop the mountain.

To embark on this adventure, start in Grindelwald and head to the Grindelwald First Cable Car Station. From there, ascend to the summit via the cable car and follow the marked signs to begin your hike.

Hike Time: Approximately 1.45 hours round trip

5. ALETSCH GLACIER PANORAMA TRAIL

Switzerland boasts numerous remarkable glaciers, but my top recommendation is the awe-inspiring Aletsch Glacier, the country’s largest. Situated in the southern Wallis region, it serves as a captivating stopover en route to Zermatt.

The sheer magnitude of the Aletsch Glacier is astounding, stretching over 23 km (14 mi) and plunging nearly 900m (2950 ft) deep, reaching all the way to Jungfraujoch. While there are several hiking options available, I particularly suggest the Aletsch Glacier Panorama Trail, offering captivating views of the glacier and the 32 surrounding 4,000m peaks.

To embark on this adventure, begin in Riederalp and ascend via the Musfluh Cable Car to the mountain’s summit. From there, the trail winds alongside the glacier, leading you to Märjelenseen, where you can opt to refuel at the hut or continue on to the Fiescheralp cable car station.
